HOW TO BOOK your paragliding experience!

paragliding brighton schoolAt APEX, our paragliding courses are designed to help you to learn to paraglide as easily as possible. We can make it easy for you to join the thousands of people who have already taken their first steps in the air...

Our Aims:
1. To teach you to fly safely, in a professional, friendly environment
2. To offer sales and professional advice on paragliding

Who Can Fly?
Anyone over 16 - there are no upper restrictions on age. You need to be reasonably fit (there is little strength involved in paragliding, but walking up hills and carrying the kit can be mildly demanding). We do not normally require a medical certificate, although anyone with skeletal problems, weak ankles etc. should think twice about flying; anyone under 18 must have parent or guardian consent. If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to give an instructor a call. APEX do not offer courses or vouchers for under-16's. Everyone attempting paragliding must be aware that it is a risk sport, and to take on board this "risk factor". If the possibility - however slight - of injury due to pursuing the sport is unacceptable, then paragliding is not for you.

In Case Of Bad Weather
If we need to call off your course, we will try to contact you as soon as possible - ideally the evening before. We reserve the right to cancel tuition at any time for reasons of either safety or comfort. When cancelling a course, the Senior Instructor's decision is final. Any credit will be carried forward to your next booked day - your cancelled days DO NOT automatically roll over to the next day. If a course is cancelled part way through, your instructor may, at his discretion, charge only part of the full price and carry remaining credit forward.

Meeting and Administration
We will meet at 09.30 am at Devil's Dyke (please be punctual). Occasionally, we meet at different times and locations by arrangement. Map and Directions here.
During the course, you will follow a well-established, progressive series of exercises which ensure safety and allow us to monitor your progress. The syllabus is laid down by the BHPA, which governs the sports in this country. An Elementary Pilot (EP) course will usually take around 5 days to complete; at the end of this you will be flying solo from 600-700ft. If your course takes longer, extra days can be added by arrangement. Progress can be made quickly by those with aptitude and commitment. During your training (possibly on the first day if weather dictates), there will be a theory session. Depending on weather conditions, this may all be done on one day or be split up into segments. The rest of the course is practical, and each day should be an enjoyable, constructive experience.
Timescales depend on personal aptitude, the weather, and any previous experience. More information on what to expect on your course here.
NB: Although APEX require pre-booking, days do not have to be taken consecutively.
After achieving Elementary Pilot, you will remain in a supervised environment until you achieve your second rating (called Club Pilot, or CP), after which you may leave school and fly unsupervised.
Many students buy their own equipment at EP level, qualifying for a free CP course (ask for details).

Apart from a spirit of adventure, all you need to bring is warm, layered clothing; footwear with good soles and ankle support is essential. Gloves and sunglasses can be a good idea, and long trousers stop grazed knees if you stumble. It's a good idea to bring a packed lunch and something to drink too, as we don't always teach near shops. Please note that there is zero alcohol tolerance throughout your course. During Summer months, we may occasionally work on weekday evenings in order to catch the weather.
